3,000 grafts is not 3,000 hairs: what a graft count means
Oct 14, 2026 · 1 min read
Clinic quotes are written in grafts, not hairs. Here is what a graft is, why the donor area sets the limit, and how to compare two quotes fairly.
What the video says
Three thousand grafts is not three thousand hairs. Hair grows in tiny groups, called follicular units. One unit usually holds one to four hairs. Each unit is moved as one graft.
What the video says
The back of your head is a bank account. Hair there is usually less affected by hair loss. That's why it's the donor area. But it's not unlimited. What you move, you can't move twice. A surgeon decides how much to spend, after examining it.
Almost every hair transplant quote is written as a number of grafts. It is easy to read "3,000 grafts" as "3,000 hairs". It is not, and knowing the difference makes quotes much easier to compare.
Hair grows in small groups
Hair does not grow one strand at a time. It grows in tiny natural groups called follicular units. One unit usually holds one to four hairs.
In a transplant, each follicular unit is moved as one piece — one graft. So a graft count tells you how many units are moved, not how many hairs. Two people with the same graft count can end up with a different number of hairs, because their units hold a different number of hairs.
The back of your head is the bank
Grafts come from the donor area, usually the back and sides of the head. Hair there is usually less affected by hair loss, which is why it is used.
But the donor area is not unlimited. What you move, you cannot move twice. That is why a surgeon looks at donor density before deciding how many grafts make sense — for this procedure and for any you may want later.
How to compare two quotes
- Compare grafts with grafts, never grafts with hairs.
- Ask how the number was chosen, and whether it is a range or a fixed figure.
- Check what the package includes: hotel, transfers, translator, follow-up. See what's inside a package.
